Manage the Site Menu

The site menu is best managed from the Main Navigation Menu. Editors can build menus for the content that they are creating, however, site administrators can change the site menu from a central location.

To see the site menu select Structure > Menus > Main Navigation.

This feature does not work right now, please see "Move a Menu Item by Adjusting the Weight"

The site menu appears as a list of links to all of the pages on the site.

Pages can be moved up and down the menu (list) by dragging the crosshairs on the far left of a menu item, up or down the menu and then saving. The page must be saved in order for the changes to become permanent.

Subpages are further to the right and higher level pages are further to the left, with the leftmost pages those that appear on the top level navigation bar of the site.

Dragging content is best when working within a subsection of the site. If entire sections of the site are to be rearranged, it is often easier to adjust the weight of the parent page.

Menu Nav List

If the site is large, and dragging content up and down the page is unwieldy, adjusting the weight of a section is an easier way to move content, especially entire sections of content.

At the far right of the menu section, select Show Row Weights.  The weight of each page and subpage will be displayed.

  • Lower (negative) numbers push the menu item higher up the list.
  • Positive (higher) numbers push the menu item lower down the list.
  • Each menu level (bump to the right) is ordered independently

Order menu links by editing the weight

  • In Edit, go to Structure> Menus>Main navigation
  • On the far right of the top of the page, select “show row weights”
  • Make note (on paper) of the current weights of each the pages in question
  • Then (on paper) wright new weights for each page so that the first page has the lowest number (0) and the next page is higher (5), then (10) and so on until all of the pages have weights.
  • Right click on the edit button the first page and open in a new tab.
  • Update the weight
  • Save.
  • Repeat until each of the pages has the new weight. The pages should now be in order.

Example

Changing the weight of Basic Editing Functions from -85 to -95 will move Basic Editing Functions and all of its subpages above the Administrative Functions section in the menu.

Items in a menu are generally weighted in the order that they were created. The default first page may be zero, and then every page added after will be one higher. See Add Content to a Menu to see how editors are directed to manage the menu when they don't have access to the site menu.

It is important that all pages are assigned a parent item and added to the menu. However, sometimes it is not desirable to see the menu link.

Note: If a parent page is hidden from the menu, subpages will also disappear. Pages can always be found using the Content Manager or the Menu list.

To hide a menu link

  • Select Structure > Menus > Main Navigation from the top admin menu.
  • Find the menu item in the list.
  • Select Edit to the right of the item
  • Uncheck the Enabled checkbox.
  • Save
