The Hidden Moral Considerations of a Study’s Generalizability

Dr. Weinfurt will unpack the logic of generalizations and the role of values in making claims about generalizability. He will discuss: - How scientists often speak about the generalizability of a study, of findings, of a dataset, etc. It is almost expected that any study in population health sciences makes some comment about the generalizability of the findings in the Discussion section. - How our normal way of talking about generalizability masks important moral considerations. Discussant: Dr. Jennifer Gierisch, Associate Professor in Population Health Sciences Dr. Weinfurt is Professor and Vice-Chair of Research in the Dpt. of Population Health Sciences and faculty member of the DCRI. He holds secondary appointment as a Professor of Psychology & Neuroscience, Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Professor of Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, and a Faculty Associate of the Trent Center for the Study of Medical Humanities & Bioethics. Dr. Weinfurt also co-directs Duke's Center for Health Measurement and Clinical Research Training Program. He currently works as Special Governmental Employee for the U.S. FDA, helping to create the Patient-Focused Drug Development guidance series and is a member of the Secretary's Advisory Committee for Human Research Protections.
