The Duke AHEC Program Office, a part of the North Carolina Area Health Education Center (AHEC), is located on the beautiful campus of Duke University Medical Center within the Duke University School of Medicine! As a partner in learning and teaching within the NC AHEC System, we are committed to connecting clinical experts from Duke with regional AHEC’s continuing professional development needs; to supporting health professions students complete clinical rotations at primary care sites; and to increasing awareness among middle and high school students of health care related careers!

Mission of the NC AHEC Program

The NC AHEC Program provides and supports educational activities and services with a focus on primary care in rural and under-resourced communities to recruit, train and retain the workforce needed to create a healthy North Carolina.

Duke AHEC 
The Duke AHEC is a part of the North Carolina Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program and housed on the campus of Duke University Medical Center in the Duke School of Medicine. The NC AHEC program began in 1974 for the purpose of establishing a statewide network of community training for health professionals and to address concerns with the supply, distribution, retention and quality of health professionals in North Carolina.

  • Duke AHEC partners with Southern Regional AHEC to provide speaker resources for continuing education that occurs in Moore, Harnett, Sampson, Bladen, Robeson, Richmond, Cumberland, Hoke, and Scotland counties;
  • Supports community-based clinical training rotations for primary care residents, medical students, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners;
  • Provides awareness, mentoring, and educational programs targeted to middle and high school students interested in pursuing a profession in health care.
  • Being a part of the NC AHEC system,we work collaboratively with the 9 AHEC’s across the state of North Carolina in an effort to accomplish the vision and mission of AHEC.

Continuing Education

The Duke AHEC Program is a primary partner in learning and teaching with Southern Regional AHEC located in Fayetteville, NC. As a partner with SR-AHEC, we support their residency and continuing education programs. Southern Regional AHEC delivers continuing education to health care providers in the following nine counties: Bladen, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Moore, Richmond, Roberson, Sampson, and Scotland.   In addition to our primary AHEC partner, the Duke AHEC Program collaborates with the remaining eight NC AHEC centers to address the continuing education needs of health care providers in their region.

The Duke AHEC Program staff works closely with our statewide AHEC partners to coordinate continuing education speakers in the following disciplines: Allied Health, Behavioral Health, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.

The Duke AHEC staff assists our partner AHECs with identifying Duke faculty and staff, who may be the appropriate speaker for their continuing education event. Contact the appropriate Duke AHEC staff listed below:
